The summer flys by so please post this two day program on your calendars. This two day event will provide an opportunity for students to learn about robotics by participating in grade level workshops and competitions. Competitions may include LEGO, VEX and FIRST Robotics.. This will sure to be a huge success! The program is under development so feel free to join in on the planning with suggestions and/or resources.

Abstract of Grant
Girls clearly are improving in math and science enrollment, but there is an alarming new gap that has to do with technology. Today, over 60 percent of all jobs require technology skills. That percentage will increase over a girl’s lifetime. Research tells us girls are not being encouraged as well as they could be in the areas of math, science and technology — from a lack of computer games with girl-appeal to a dearth of opportunities in technology classrooms dominated by boys.
TCMS would like to provide gifted and talented girls the opportunity to work with advanced technology concepts, designs and structures using LEGO s. LEGO® MINDSTORMS® for Schools is a unique concept that gives youngsters their first experience of real-life programming techniques in a way that is user-friendly and fun. The programming platform is called ROBOLAB™. Youngsters create their program and download it from the computer to their intelligent LEGO RCX brick. Students would also be mentored by women with careers in a technology-rich field.
Goals & Objectives
Goals: 1. Cooperative grouping of students utilizing student’s strengths because of the diversity of activities involved with the construction and programming of a robot. 2. Computer programming skill training. 3. Provide student with the assurance that they can produce and control technology. 4. Develop an ability to integrate Robotic technology into labs previously overlooked. 5. Cultivate a flexibility to use the MINDSTORMS system at different times of the year.
Objectives: ~To have the students work in team settings to achieve set goals ~Develop computer programming skills-Understand the various limitations that exist with real robots ~Comprehend how robots interact in their lives today-Expand student’s imagination regarding the use of robots in the future
Sunshine State Standards:H 1.3. *Use scientific processes and habits of the mind to solve problems. H. 1.3.1 *Scientific knowledge is subject to modification. H. 2.3.1 *Patterns exist within and across systems.H. 3.3.7 *Computers speed up and extend the ability to collect, sort, and analyze data
Evaluation: Explain the methods you will use to determine the success of the activity and the achievement of the stated goals.
Hands-On Evaluation: Students will demonstrate safety procedures and model proper use of LEGO MINDSTORM
Presentation: Students will be able to effectively communicate and present information about the robot project. Students design, build, test, and evaluate a robot. Students will be able to demonstrate operation skills at the presentation. Post-Test & Survey
